Jeanmar Gomez won the battle to be the Indians fifth starter to open up the 2012 season. It was a battle that Gomez took advantage of after it looked like the Fausto Carmona/Robert Hernandez visa scandal started to shake out. The Indians needed another starter. Gomez sprinted to the front of the line.
Gomez and Josh Tomlin are the home grown talent in the Indians rotation after getting experience in the Indians farm system.
Gomez beat out Kevin Slowey, and Frank Herrmann who were optioned to Class AAA Columbus.
For a moment Gomez gave the Indians a scare against Cincinnati when he left his start strained right hip.
Manager Manny Acta says Gomez is fine. He will be ready when it comes time for his first start on April 11th.
Gomez was 1-1 in spring training. He threw 19 innings, with 14 strikeouts.
