The Indians are close to having a new closer. Buster Olney of ESPN is reporting the Indians are on the verge of signing right handed pitcher John Axford.
An MLB insider told Sports Director Andy Baskin the deal is going to take a few days.
The 30-year-old Axford pitched 54 2/3 innings in 2013 for the Milwaukee Brewers. In August, he was traded to the Cardinals.
In Milwaukee, he lost the closers spot after suffering six blown saves.
In 10.1 regular-season innings for the Cards, Axford gave up two earned runs, walked three and struck out 11 with a 1.74 ERA. His seven total blown saves were the second-most of his career.
Axford is from the other side of Lake Erie. Born in Simcoe, Ontario. He is 30 years old.
