Akron Among Final 4 In Running For Olympic Marathon Trials

Olympic Committee To Make Selection In April

POSTED: 7:24 pm EST February 14, 2006

Olympic officials were in Akron Tuesday, which is one of the final four cities in the running to hold the U.S. marathon trials for the 2008 Olympics.

Akron is competing with some heavyweight cities to hold the trials, and not being a huge city may be in its favor, reported NewsChannel5's Jonathan Costen.

A group of five people who represent the U.S. Olympic track and field team got a bus tour of Akron. The city wants to convince the committee that Akron is its best bet to host the team trials.

The other cities in the running are Boston, New York and Minneapolis.

The competition is tough, but organizers of the tour believe that Akron offers a sweet deal, and that its size is a major selling point.

The final announcement will be made April 3. If Akron is chosen, the U.S. championship will be held there in 2007, and the Olympic trials in 2008.
