Jamie Langenbrunner and Alexander Mogilny scored goals for the Devils, who were coming off a win over Pittsburgh in their opener. Martin Brodeur, winner of the past two Vezina Trophies, was torched for five goals on 33 shots in the setback.

Peter Bondra and Marian Hossa each had a goal and two assists, while Mike Dunham had 19 saves as Atlanta defeated Washington, 7-3, at MCI Center in the first game of a home-and-home series. After going 0-for-6 while on the power play in its first game, Atlanta was 4- for-8 against Washington, tying a franchise record for most power-play goals in one game. Seven different players scored for the Thrashers, who won for just the second time ever in Washington. Olaf Kolzig stopped 32 shots and Mathieu Biron, Brian Willsie and Andrew Cassels each had a goal for the Capitals, who opened their season with a 3-2 win over Columbus on Wednesday. Alexander Ovechkin added one assist.

Final Score: Carolina 3, Pittsburgh 2 (SO)

Raleigh, NC (Sports Network) - Cory Stillman's shootout goal lifted the Carolina Hurricanes to a 3-2 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins at RBC Center. Stillman also had a goal in regulation for the Hurricanes, who blew a 2-0 lead but won the shootout 1-0 to salvage two points. Eric Staal also had a goal for Carolina, which was playing its home opener after dropping its season debut in Tampa Bay. Rookie goaltender Cam Ward made 28 saves and stopped Mario Lemieux and fellow rookie Sidney Crosby in the shootout, helping the Hurricanes earn their second win in eight home openers. Ziggy Palffy had a goal, but missed the net entirely on his shootout attempt for the Penguins, who remain winless this season but picked up their first point by forcing overtime with two third-period goals.

Final Score: Calgary 3, Columbus 1

Columbus, OH (Sports Network) - Daymond Langkow scored the go-ahead goal early in the third period and assisted on another score as Calgary downed Columbus 3-1 at Nationwide Arena. Free-agent signee Darren McCarty netted his first Flames goal and Andrew Ference had a pair of assists for Calgary, which rebounded from Wednesday's 6-3 loss at Minnesota on Wednesday to spoil the Blue Jackets' home season opener. Columbus, which was playing without star forward Rick Nash, received 35 saves from Marc Denis in defeat. Nash sat out the contest with a high ankle sprain. The Blue Jackets began their 2004-05 campaign with a 3-2 setback at Washington on Wednesday.

Final Score: Florida 2, Tampa Bay 0

Sunrise, FL (Sports Network) - Juraj Kolnik scored with less than three minutes remaining to break a scoreless tie and lead the Florida Panthers to a 2-0 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning at BankAtlantic Center. Roberto Luongo stopped all 27 shots he faced for Florida, and has yet to yield a goal in its first two games. He now has 25 career shutouts. His counterpart John Grahame, though, was equally stingy through the majority of the contest and finished with 29 saves. But Kolnik's quick shot from against the boards snuck past him to decide the game. Olli Jokinen added an empty-net goal and Jozef Stumpel got credit for the assist on the game-winner, although it was actually a shot gone awry.
