Former Browns Owner Says He Was BetrayedArt Modell Speaks Exclusively To Ted HenryUPDATED: 3:51 pm EDT July 20,
2005 BALTIMORE -- Art Modell -- he was Cleveland's Woody Hayes, Bobby Knight and George Steinbrenner all rolled into one. Modell was one of the most colorful and controversial public figures to ever call Cleveland home. Finally, after years of pursuit, in an exclusive series of reports NewsChannel5 has persuaded Modell to speak on the record about the reason he moved his beloved Cleveland Browns to Baltimore. Two days ago when I sat down with him in his Baltimore home, he found a powerful man who is still quite vital at the age of 80. Loving, funny, sad, angry and tearful, Modell displayed just about every side of him there is. Modell was and still is a larger-than-life sports impresario you either loved or you hated. There was never any middle ground with Modell. Even though he has won his share of big football games over the years, including the big enchilada as he puts it -- the Super Bowl -- Modell said he still has a bitter score to settle with some of Cleveland’s most powerful leaders. Modell said they betrayed him and that few Clevelanders completely understand the real reason he felt he had to move the Browns to Baltimore. He actually said that he was "told" to move his team by some of the most powerful people around. Starting Wednesday at 11 p.m., you'll begin to hear from the former Browns owner who has not once set foot in Cleveland in the past 10 years, except for one court appearance. He said he's a changed man, but it's still obvious that he carries great anger inside him, not for the Browns fans, whom he said he still loves, but for those who promised to help him keep his team in Cleveland and then did nothing. After a decade of silence, Modell finally wants to speak to the people of Cleveland. Copyright 2005 by NewsNet5. All rights reserved.
