HUDSON, Ohio -- An attorney for a parent said that a fight during a youth baseball tournament was started by the umpire, NewsChannel5 reported.

Umpire Gets Black Eye

The home plate umpire, Howard Clafin, left the game with a black eye, broken finger and stictches last weekend.

Claflin saw a 14-year-old player from North Royalton slam his helmet twice, so he ejected the player from the game. That's when witnesses told Hudson police that the boy's father, who is also an assistant coach, charged the umpire and began screaming in his face.

Claflin said that his instincts told him the man was so enraged that his life could be in jeopardy, so he grabbed the man's collar.

The evidence was turned over to the prosecutor to determine if criminal charges will be filed.
