Kellen Winslow Thrown From Motorcycle In Weekend Crash

UPDATED: 6:17 pm EDT May 2, 2005

NewsChannel5 sports director Chris Miller confirmed Cleveland Browns' Kellen Winslow crashed his motorcycle Sunday night.

Winslow was treated at Fairview Park Hospital, but was transferred to the Cleveland Clinic Monday to be examined by the team's medical staff. He is undergoing testing.

The extent of his injuries are not known. The team earlier stated that his injuries are not serious.

Fire officials said Winslow crashed his 2005 Suzuki motorcycle in the parking lot of the Cuyahoga Community College's Westlake campus. He hit a curb at about 7:25 p.m. Sunday.

According to Westlake police, Winslow's estimated speed at the time of the crash was 35 mph. He was thrown over the motorcycle's handlebars. He was reportedly wearing a helmet, but it became dislodged during the crash.

Police said Winslow complained of chest pains following the accident.

He told police that he was trying out his new bike when he lost control. He had just purchased it less than 30 days ago.

NewsChannel5 learned that four other people were with Winslow at the time of the crash.

There is no word yet if any charges will be filed in the incident.

Winslow broke his right fibula last season during a September game against Dallas and ended up sitting out the rest of the season.

Neither the team nor his agent would comment on whether there was any language in Winslow's contract regarding extreme activities.

Miller reported that because there is a history of athletes injuring themselves in extreme activities, many contracts state something about it.
