Chief Wahoo Keeps Grinning

Complaints By American Indians Dismissed

POSTED: 11:36 a.m. EST March 31, 2000

Chief Wahoo will continue to smile on the Indians.

Chief Wahoo The Tribe's mascot has survived a challenge before the Ohio Civil Rights Commission, NewsChannel5 reports.

The panel rejected complaints that said that the Chief Wahoo image was racist.

Three American Indians filed complaints last June saying that the grinning, red-skinned mascot makes it impossible for them to enjoy the games at Jacobs Field.

According to The Associated Press, the commission also threw out a companion complaint filed by Sherrie Noble of Westlake. Noble's filing compared the Wahoo logo to a Nazi swastika. Noble is white and said Chief Wahoo prevents her from enjoying the benefits of an inter-cultural association with American Indians.

New team owner Larry Dolan has said that he would keep Chief Wahoo as the team's mascot.
