NBA's Manu Ginobili Undergoes Rabies Shots

Spurs Guard Knocked Down Bat During Saturday's Game

Two days after swatting a bat that was flying around the AT&T Center during Saturday night's game against the Sacramento Kings, Spurs shooting guard Manu Ginobili confirmed that he is undergoing rabies shots as a precaution, San Antonio's KSAT reported.

Ginobili showed up at the team's practice facility Monday afternoon with a bandage on his arm and acknowledged that he had started a round of rabies vaccinations. He underwent a series of five shots, and will have to undergo seven to 10 more shots over the next month.

"It was pretty funny at the time, but now it's not," Ginobili told reporters Monday.

The Spurs' game against the Kings was in the first quarter when the bat started dive-bombing players on the court, forcing two game delays.

As the bat was flying low on the court, Ginobili reached up and hit the bat with his left hand, causing the bat to fall stunned to the court.

Ginobili picked up the mammal and handed it to a maintenance man.

Although there had been initial reports that the bat had been killed, it turns out it was alive and later flew away from the maintenance man.

Since the bat could not be recaptured and tested for rabies, Ginobili confirmed that he had to start taking rabies shots as a precaution against illness and infection.

According to the Spurs, the bat did not puncture the skin, but experts told the team that any person coming in contact with a potential rabies carrier should be given the shots as a precaution.
