Local Teams | Six-Run Third Helps Tribe Beat TwinsPOSTED: 6:43 pm EDT August 16,
2009 Minneapolis, MN -- (Sports Network) - Kelly Shoppach and Luis Valbuena hit back- to-back homers to spark Cleveland's six-run third inning, as the Indians rolled to a 7-4 victory over the reeling Twins.Grady Sizemore went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer, while Jhonny Peralta added three hits and an RBI for the Indians, who won the final two meetings of this three-game set. Aaron Laffey (7-3) was credited with the win, allowing three runs on five hits and four walks through 5 1/3 innings. Delmon Young belted a two-run homer for Minnesota, which has dropped five straight series. Nick Blackburn (8-8), who didn't get out of the second inning in his previous start, was just as ineffective Sunday, surrendering six runs on six hits in 2 1/3 frames. "We're going through a rough patch right now. It's fortunate we still have 40 some-odd games to go...It could be good, it could be bad," Twins reliever Joe Nathan said. Young followed Joe Crede's run-scoring groundout in the second with a two-run homer for an early 3-0 Twins lead. Cleveland responded with six runs in their next turn at the plate, ignited by back-to-back solo homers from Shoppach and Valbuena. Blackburn then hit Andy Marte and Sizemore went deep to right for his 17th homer of the season. Asdrubal Cabrera doubled in Jamey Carroll later in the inning and scored on a Peralta base hit that ended Blackburn's short stint on the mound. Shin-Soo Choo hit a two-out, RBI double in the fourth, and Laffey induced an inning-ending double play ball off the bat of Young to get out of a bases- loaded jam in the bottom half. "I had to battle...getting that double play was huge to save that inning," Laffey said. Another double play ended a promising chance for Minnesota in the seventh, and the hosts stranded a runner on third an inning later. Denard Span recorded a meaningless RBI single in the ninth off Kerry Wood. Game Notes Blackburn entered with a 4-1 record and a 1.80 ERA in six lifetime starts, eight appearances, against the Indians...These teams have split 12 games this season...Five Minnesota relievers combined to allow just one run over 6 2/3 innings...Joe Mauer extended his hit streak to 13 consecutive games with an eighth inning single Copyright 2009 Courtesy of The Sports Network.
