Bruce Leads Reds Past Tribe

POSTED: 2:29 am EDT June 28, 2009

(Sports Network) - Jay Bruce homered and drove in two runs, and Homer Bailey got his first win in a year and a half, as the Cincinnati Reds defeated the Cleveland Indians, 7-3, in the second of three games between the intrastate foes.

Bruce launched his 18th homer of the season, while Bailey (1-0) gave up three runs on three hits and seven walks, with two strikeouts, in five innings for the Reds, who had lost five of six coming into the game.

Bailey won for the first time since September 30, 2006, having dropped his last six decisions. His only other start in 2009 also came against the Indians, allowing six runs in 4 1/3 innings of a 7-6 defeat.

"I kind of got out of rhythm, but nobody said wins had to be pretty," said Bailey. "I'm glad we did it. A win is a win."

Jerry Hairston, Jr. went 3-for-5, while Chris Dickerson, Joey Votto and Laynce Nix each had a pair of hits in the win.

Grady Sizemore drove in a pair of runs, while Travis Hafner and Jhonny Peralta each had two hits for Cleveland, which has dropped nine of 11. Tomo Ohka (0-2) gave up six runs on eight hits and four walks in four-plus innings to get the loss.

Cincinnati grabbed an early lead on Bruce's solo homer to lead off the second.

Ryan Hanigan followed the blast with a clean single to center, and Paul Janish put down a perfect bunt single, still with nobody out. Dickerson then laced a double to deep right field to plate one runner, and Hairston doubled off the wall in left to score another runner.

Votto's RBI groundout capped the inning with the Reds holding a 4-0 lead.

The Indians got one run back in the home second on Luis Valbuena's double play groundout, scoring Ryan Garko, who led off the frame with a walk.

Bruce restored Cincinnati's four-run edge with a sacrifice fly in the third.

After Janish scored on Hairston's double play groundout in the fourth, Sizemore cut the Indians' deficit to 6-3 with a two-out two-run single in the home half.

The Reds went back in front by four for the third time, 7-3, when Nix led off the seventh with a double and scored when Jonny Gomes hit a hard grounder that Garko couldn't handle at first base.

Arthur Rhodes, David Weathers and Francisco Cordero combined to shut out the Indians the rest of the way, pitching an inning of scoreless relief apiece.

"We had a few chances early and we weren't able to knock him (Bailey) out of the game," said Indians catcher Victor Martinez.
