Minnesota Twins Owner Dies At 93

Team Won Two World Series Under Carl Pohlad's Ownership

UPDATED: 5:38 pm EST January 5, 2009

Minneapolis news media report that Carl Pohlad, the owner of the Minnesota Twins baseball team, has died. He was 93 years old.

Pohlad, an Iowa native, bought the Twins in 1984. In that time, the team won the World Series in 1987 and 1991.

He also led an attempt to force state lawmakers to build a new Twins stadium with public funds -- and threatened to sell the team to potential owners in other cities.

Pohlad's threatened deadline passed but the lawmakers called his bluff -- he kept the team in Minnesota.

The Pohlad family also owned or ran various banking, bottling, real estate and other companies, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reported. Forbes magazine ranked him as the 102nd richest person in America.
