Brett Favre In Cleveland For Browns Game

Quarterback Traded To New York Jets

POSTED: 10:33 am EDT August 7, 2008
UPDATED: 2:06 pm EDT August 7, 2008

The newest member of the New York Jets is on his way to Cleveland.

Former Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre will hold a news conference at 6 p.m. at Cleveland Browns Stadium. Jets chairman and CEO Woody Johnson and general manager Mike Tannenbaum expected to attend.

The Browns are playing the Jets in their first preseason game Thursday at 7:30 p.m.

The Packers traded Favre to the Jets late Wednesday night, said Favre's agent James "Bus" Cook.

The news does not come as much of a surprise, but the location was unexpected.

Saying they were acting in the best interest of the Green Bay Packers, team president Mark Murphy spoke to the media Thursday.

"We are glad that this matter has come to closure for the team and Brett," Murphy said.

Murphy said that he, General Manager Ted Thompson and Head Coach Mike McCarthy were in complete agreement at all times in regards to the Favre situation.

"We've been at an impasse for quite a while. We didn't think he would show up at camp. They didn't think we wanted him at camp," Murphy said. "We want to have a long-term relationship with Brett and I think he does too."

Favre, 38, is coming off one of his best seasons ever. He led the Packers to a 13-3 regular season record in 2007 while throwing for 4.155 yards, 28 touchdowns and a career-best 66.5 completion percentage.

In his time at Green Bay, Favre racked up statistics ranking him as one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time.

He was drafted by the Atlanta Falcons in the second round of the 1991 draft, but played in only two games before being traded to the Packers for a 1992 first-round pick.

He broke Dan Marino's all-time touchdown pass record in a game against Minnesota on Sept. 30, 2007. So far, he has thrown 442 touchdown passes for 61,655 yards, which are both NFL records.

However, his exuberance has sometimes gotten the best of him, and he has earned a reputation for trying to force passes when they are not there. He holds the league mark for interceptions, with 288.

He is the only player to ever receive the Most Valuable Player award three years in a row and led the Packers to a victory in Super Bowl XXXI in 1997.

He has also proved to be one of the most durable players of all time, and certainly the most durable quarterback. He has set an NFL record of 275 consecutive starts, including playoff games.

According to the New York Daily News, the Packers will receive a fourth-round pick that could escalate to a first- rounder if Favre takes part in 80 percent of the Jets' plays and New York makes the Super Bowl. Green Bay could also get either a second or third-round selection depending on Favre and the Jets' performance.
