Boobie Gibson Used To Love Another Sport

Daniel "Boobie" Gibson is living his dream -- playing basketball.

When NewsChannel5's Danita Harris sat down to talk with Boobie, a Cleveland Cavaliers point guard, he told her his first love was not basketball.

"My first love was football. I used to play football," he said. "But when I was younger, I got hit one time and it was cold outside and I came over to the bench and I stopped playing that day. I started playing basketball and it just kind of took off from there."

The former University of Texas guard sends Cavaliers fans into a frenzy with his smooth three-pointers.

Practice is how the 21-year-old makes it look easy.

"We shoot about 1,000 three-pointers a day. When I wake up about 8 o'clock, I go to the gym and we have a machine where it keeps throwing the ball back, and I take about 500. Then I go work out. Then when I'm all done, I go shoot 500 more."

Harris reported that Gibson believes in hard work. Playing for the Cavaliers, he said, is a blessing. And he's taking full advantage of it.

"It's like paradise," he said. "You're just out there, like having fun, smiling. And once I get the ball it's.... I just go into a whole other world. I love it."

Gibson said he might even have an alter ego.

"I know when I'm around, I joke with guys and hang out and try to be that little brother type of guy," he said. "But out there on the floor, I'm aggressive. I'm competitive and I want to win."

Harris said it's Gibson's winning smile that endears all who see him. Cavs fans fell in love with his childhood nickname and now "Boobie Mania" is sweeping Cleveland.

"The time when I was at the free throw line and I heard the crowd saying it, I got goose bumps," he said. "It's something that you dream about when you're little. It's just amazing. I see T-shirts and all those things. A lot of times, I don't think it's true."
