CLEVELAND -- Many children head back to school in less than three weeks and that means back-to-school shopping is under way.Children want the latest styles but many families are facing the financial challenge of everything costing more and may not be able to spend as much as last year.So NewsChannel5 went shopping to see what's in and how people are adjusting. There are two schools of thought when it comes to back-to-school shopping.Travis Julian, district manager for JCPenney, said, "Shop early because you have the best selection of styles and colors."Pam Pearlman, a mother of four, said she does the opposite."I start with a little bit. I let them get back to school and see and then add from there then they see what everyone is wearing," said Pearlman.Emily Tulk is the store manager at Shi Studies Fashion, a shoe store for women. She said when it comes to footwear, Ugg boots are always in and this year they have a lot of different colored tennis shoes and retro stuff. When it comes to clothes, it’s no surprise that the Disney Channel drives a lot of sales."Hannah Montana has been a huge checkout for us this year,” said Julian. He said when it comes to the boys, the military style is big and denim is something that appeals to both genders. When it comes to changing your look, you don’t necessarily have to buy several different outfits."Layering is a big trend not only for young girls, boys, juniors and young men. You can buy a couple of pieces, tanks, tees and hoodies, and layer them and change them up for many different looks,” said Julian.Make sure you do your homework and check with your child's school to understand any dress codes. Regardless of dress codes, your child’s first assignment should be taking stock of what they do have in their closet.Michelle Carson, a mother of four, said her kids are really good when it comes to back-to-school shopping."They know what we are looking for. We go with a list, we inventory what they have, we go through what they need. We don't go overboard," she said. There are always chances to stretch your dollar, whether it’s buying on sale, shopping with coupons, or browsing the consignment shops.Pearlman said consider giving kids some control."Someone suggested get them a gift certificate for so much and then that's it. They can go to the mall for that much and then they are done," she said.If your child does have a uniform, check with the school to see if they offer discounts for new uniforms if you bring in one that no longer fits. There's always the option of consignment shops or swapping with friends. If you shop at Giant Eagle, you can earn 20 cents in Fuelperks with your Giant Eagle Advantage card for every $50 you spend on qualifying retailer gift cards. This back to school special expires Aug. 27.
