CLEVELAND -- With gas sometimes topping $4 per gallon, filling 'er up without trying some tips from the experts is like pouring money down the drain.Good Morning Cleveland anchor Paul Kiska asked fuel expert Lori Cook, with AAA Ohio Motorists Association, to sort out the fact from the fiction when it comes to fuel savings. The first question: Does shutting off your air conditioner save gas? Cook said that’s fiction. According to Cook it doesn’t make a big difference, "Unless you're going down the Ohio Turnpike with all four windows down and the sunroof open creating more drag, there's not much of a difference; to be comfortable, use air conditioner."Question No. 2: Does using cruise control save money on gas?Cook said that’s a fact. Cruise control can keep an inconsistent driver from speeding up and slowing down needlessly, which can waste gasoline.Question No. 3: Can checking your car’s tire pressure improve gas mileage?Cook said that’s also a fact. Just check the manufacturer’s recommendations.Question No. 4: Does emptying your trunk improve gas mileage?Cook said that’s also a fact. “A heavier vehicle uses more gas,” she said.Question No. 5: Does driving aggressively burn more fuel than moderate driving?Cook said yes, that’s also a fact. Being a consistent driver and simply slowing down can save you the most money. According to published driving tests, many of the tips listed above can save up to 14 percent on gas.Studies also show that not driving aggressively saves the most on gas and fuel. By just going the speed limit and not weaving in and out of traffic, experts say you can save up to 37 percent by just steadily going the speed limit.
