BEACHWOOD, Ohio -- It's prime time wedding season and many people go all out for their special day.And what would a wedding be without a wonderful cake to top it all off? Two local ladies have turned their love for art into a career of cakes, reported NewsChannel5.Marianne Carroll and Lauren Bozich are owners of the White Flower Cake Shoppe in Beachwood. They were just 27 years old when they opened their shop last year. The two have been best friends since junior high."We've always been very artistic and we worked in bakeries since we were 16, and our first job was at a Dairy Queen of all places, and that’s where learned to do cake decorating," said Carroll. Both pursued art degrees, Marianne at the Columbus College of Art and Design and Lauren at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. When they graduated they weren't too thrilled with their prospects. That's when they had the idea for a custom cake shop; basically, edible art. They worked full time at bakeries, gaining experience, and when their shift was done, they would experiment at home."Most of the people our age were out on Friday night, going out and partying, and we were stuck at home baking and filling orders for the weekend," said Carroll. After five years, they were ready to open their own shop."It's a lot of work. We knew it was going to be a lot of work, but I never really thought I would not be sleeping. Like all of last year, I think I have aged in my entire life. I constantly have bags eyes. I have been pulling out gray hairs left and right,” said Bozich. Now the women have a team of bakers who will be helping with this years wedding season. They don't just make wedding cakes, they also make cakes for birthdays, Bah Mitzvahs, just about anything you want -- and the more challenging the better."We did a whole turkey dinner, everything she was preparing that night. She sent us a list what she was going to have, including onion pieces and what kind of cheese on top. It really looked like a Thanksgiving dinner and she had that put out on her table, but it was actually all made out of cake," said Bozich.Added touches like dozens of frosted flowers can take months to make, which drives up the cost. But the regulars say it's all worth it.Cheryl Nitowsky said she knows she can always count on a good cake from White Flower."Whenever I have a special occasion, I buy somebody a cake here," she said. For more information, go to www.whiteflowercake.com.
