Investigation Compares Refunds Using Tax Services, Software

Newschannel5 asked a family to compare the results of using Turbo Tax to two local tax services when it comes to getting the best refund.

The family's main bread-winner has a full-time job and does odd jobs on the side, so their return has itemized reductions.

The hidden camera investigation started at H&R Block where the family was charged $463 for the tax preparation. The family will get back $1,446 as a tax refund.

Across town, the refund total wasn't much different at Liberty Tax Service. The family's refund totaled up to $1,464. That's just $18 more than H&R Block. Liberty charged $32 less.

TurboTax software cost just $80. The family managed to get through most of their return easily, but couldn't figure out how to deduct work mileage. The TurboTax refund was only $229.

Certified public accountant Linda Rippel said, "Turbo Tax is good if you have an idea of what the end result is supposed to look like."

Experts said Turbo Tax and other computer software is best for people who have simple tax returns. People with more complex paperwork might want to get help from a professional accountant.
