Revs Hope Things Return To Normal Against 'Quakes

POSTED: 11:58 pm EDT May 15, 2008

(Sports Network) - After last weekend's 2-1 victory over Chivas USA, New England Revolution coach Steve Nicol thought everything was "getting back to normal."

Taylor Twellman, a member of the U.S. national team, made his season debut and scored. Veteran Steve Ralston was starting for the first time since the season opener and had an assist.

And New England, which has struggled to find any consistency this year, looked as dangerous as last season's Major League Soccer Cup runner-up.

Unfortunately for New England, Twellman turned his ankle late in the match and fellow striker Kenny Mansally also has an ankle sprain. Both are doubtful for Saturday's game against the San Jose Earthquakes at Gillette Stadium.

"I went to show for the ball and thought I stepped on Shavar Thomas' ankle. I don't know if I rolled it; I don't know. ... it's just kind of a bummer right now," Twellman said after the match.

So everything hasn't returned to normal in New England yet, and the Revolution will have to overcome the injuries to snap a two-game home losing streak.

New England was shut out in back-to-back home games to the Colorado Rapids and the Chicago Fire.

Without Twellman, who missed in the first seven games, New England loses a lot of its potency on offense. He had 16 goals last season.

"It's just that extra bit of quality," Nicol said.

Despite its early-season problems, the Revolution are still in third place in the Eastern Conference. Columbus is just five points away in first and Chicago is three away in second.

That's why Nicol, who thought the team could have played a little better last week, was just happy to leave The Home Depot Center with a win.

"We could've had more goals, we would've liked a clean sheet, but we'll take the three points," Nicol said.

San Jose, which has the worst record in the league, suffered its worst loss of the season last weekend. The Earthquakes blew a second-half lead when Columbus scored three goals in an 11-minute span of a 3-2 win.

"We dodged some bullets early in the game, but that caught up with us later when they scored those three quick goals," said San Jose's Ryan Johnson, who scored in the loss. "It was nice to get some goals but we cannot give up three goals like that at home."

Against New England, San Jose will be without newly-acquired striker Peguero Jean Philippe because of a knee injury and forward Gavin Glinton is out with a sports hernia. Defender Nick Garcia is also probable with a groin strain.

San Jose, which scored as many goals against Columbus as it has in all of its other games, has been playing well according to midfielder Ronnie O'Brien, but just hasn't been getting good results.

"To be honest, we are doing fairly well overall, but we just have not gotten the results. With a bit of luck and a couple of bounces we could be looking at some different results," O'Brien said. "We need to stay focused throughout the whole game and the results will come."
