When The Computer Goes Mute

She Successfully Upgraded To Windows '98; That's The Problem

Tech-support advice from John Wetter,

"Since installing Windows 98 on my computer, I cannot get any sound from my speakers, although they are hooked up correctly.

"The only sound I can get is the sound of dialing to connect to the Internet. Don't know what else to try. Help!

Come again?"P.S. I had sound when I was on Windows 95; the problem has just been since the upgrade (to Windows 98)."

--Bobbie Bergman, North Canton, Ohio

Bobbie,

This is a fairly common problem when upgrading a computer to a new operating system. What most likely happened was that the device drivers that Windows 95 used for your soundcard are incompatible with Windows 98 or else somehow got corrupted when you upgraded to Windows 98.

Who's Drivin'?

Every device in your computer needs these drivers, including your CD-ROM, soundcard and modem, to name just a few. The device driver tells Windows 98 what the soundcard is and how it's supposed to work.

The reason that you can still hear your modem is that it probably has its own speaker built into it. Most modems still have this from the days before computers could make all of the nice sounds that they do now.

To warn you right away, this kind of problem can be a tedious one to fix. Sometimes it's easy; sometimes it's not. I can tell you that many times, I have spent hours trying to find out why everything in my computer won't just talk nicely to each other.

Now, Where Is That Soundcard ...

First, let's see if Windows 98 knows if the soundcard is even there.

  • To do this, go to the My Computer icon on your desktop and right-click on it.
  • Then click on Properties. This brings up the System Properties screen.
  • In System Properties, click on the Device Manager tab.
In this tab, you will see a listing of all of the devices for your system. Take note if any of them have an exclamation point or a question mark next to them. That means that Windows sees that there is a device there but doesn't know what to do with it. If this is the case, then you need to contact the manufacturer of your computer about getting the proper drivers for your soundcard. Most manufacturers' Web sites are very good at having new drivers for Windows 98, with instructions on how to install them.

If you did not see any question marks or exclamation points, this means that Windows sees your device and it appears to be working. See my earlier column about making sure that all of your volume settings are correct:
