Word has been rampant across the Internet that a nationwide candlelight vigil is planned for Friday evening, as a ceremony of solidarity against the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
Times are varying, but the main current rumor is that separate vigils are planned, at 7 p.m. in each time zone. An earlier rumor reported a simultaneous vigil across the United States at 10 p.m. Eastern time, 9 p.m. Central, 8 p.m. Mountain, 7 p.m. Pacific.
One well-circulated e-mail message is as follows:
"An important message I have been asked to forward:
Friday Night at 7:00 p.m. step out your door, stop your car, or step out of your establishment and light a candle. We will show the world that Americans are strong and united together against terrorism. Please pass this to everyone on your e-mail list. We need to reach everyone across the United States quickly.
The message: WE STAND UNITED -- WE WILL NOT TOLERATE TERRORISM."
