Sense Continues To Haunt First Place
The mysterious sounds of things going bump in the night over the weekend were probably caused by the jolt generated by Disney's The Sixth Sense as it clobbered rivals for a third straight week. The Bruce illis, Haley Joel Osment starrer earned an estimated $24.1 million, almost the same as it took it during each of the first two weekends, to bring its total to date to $107.7 million. In second place was the second week of Universal's Bowfinger, which earned $10.7 million. Warner's opening of Mickey Blue Eyes took the third position with an estimated $10.4 million. (The so-so performance, Ehrenkrantz King Nussbaum analyst Barry Hyman told Bloomberg News, must be regarded as "disappointing for Time Warner, because they haven't had a big win for several months. Artisan's The Blair Witch Project, was not ready to give up the ghost, finishing fifth with about $7.1 million, to bring its total to $120.5 million. The top ten films for the weekend, according to studio estimates compiled by Exhibitor Relations: 1. Sixth Sense, The, $24.1 million; 2. Bowfinger>, $10.7 million; 3. Mickey Blue Eyes, 10.4 million; 4. Runaway Bride, $9.3 million; 5. Blair Witch Project, The, $7.1 million; 6.Thomas Crown Affair, The , $7 million; 7.Universal Soldier: The Return, $4.7 million; 8. Inspector Gadget, $4.3 million; 9. Deep Blue Sea , $3.8 million; 10. Teaching Mrs. Tingle, $3.5 million.
