Health Department Says Restaurant Not Fixing Violations

Inspection: Hot Food Kept Below Safe Temperatures

UPDATED: 8:21 am EST March 26, 2004

The Board of Health said that a northeast Ohio eatery hadn't taken care of its violations after repeated inspections.

NewsChannel5's Joe Pagonakis said in the "Restaurant Report" that he went looking for answers at the Colonial Eatery on Ridge Road in Parma. The Cuyahoga County Board of Health says the restaurant is a repeat violator, according to a two-page report.

"The thing that bugs me the most is the report says none of the prior violations have been taken care of can you tell me why?" Pagonakis asked.

The health department says Colonial Eatery was keeping hot food more than 25 degrees below the safe temperature of 140. And it was concerned about cross contamination between ready-to-eat and uncooked foods.

Pagonakis read the violations off of the health department report.

"Mashed Potatoes at 115, it's got to be at least 140. The chicken Paprikash at 110," Pagonakis said.

The Colonial Eatery staff assured Pagonakis the food was now up to temperature.

"Do you have a thermometer here? Do you have one of those thermometers?" Pagonakis asked.

He said they didn't have a cooking thermometer in the kitchen. That, too, is a violation.

Meanwhile, structural and equipment violations were still not taken care of after two inspections over the past eight weeks.

"They, the health department, want this sealed. This sink, it's got to be repaired," Pagonakis said.

Blue-Ribbon Award

It was better news at the No. 1 Express Chinese Restaurant on Warrensville Center Road in Warrensville Heights.

The restaurant was profiled in the "Restaurant Report" two weeks ago with numerous health department violations. The health department is now pleased to report No. 1 Express is violation-free.

Violation-free dining can also be found at Stancatos Restaurant on State Road in Parma.

Angie's Pizza on Royalton Road in North Royalton and Don's Pomeroy House on Pearl Road in Strongsville got a clean bill of health. All three earn the NewsChannel5 blue-ribbon award.

The health department reported the Colonial Eatery is working to correct its violations.
