CLEVELAND -- A backlog of voter registration cards at the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections is causing concern as people begin to worry if they will be able to vote in November's election, reported NewsChannel5's Brad Harvey. Because of the overwhelming interest in the coming election, more than 200,000 people have either registered to vote or made changes to their registrations since January. The backlog has been as high as 30,000, with a flood of new cards coming in each day. All the people who send in a registration card also need to be notified and told where to vote. The Voter Registration Coalition took the issue before the Cuyahoga Country Commission Tuesday."The board is frankly swamped trying to process these cards in a timely way," said Judy Gallo, of the Voter Registration Coalition. "What we're concerned about is that the deadline for registering will pass, that's Oct. 4, and many people will not yet know if they're in the system."The board has hired 33 more workers to help process the cards, and it is processing 5,000 cards a day. Director Michael Vu says it is not time to panic."When it does come to this bit of information, I do think it's premature and it's on the verge of inciting panic," said Vu. "I do not believe this is a concern at this point and of course, I would be the first one to say so if that were the case."If you have recently registered and haven't heard from the board, you can call the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections hotline at (216) 443-3298.
