Child Shot Inside Outdoors Store

Victim Reportedly Hit In Leg

UPDATED: 8:00 am EST March 9, 2004

A 2 1/2-year-old child was airlifted to The Ohio State University Medical Center in Columbus after reportedly being shot in the leg Monday afternoon.

The shooting occurred just before 2 p.m. at Woodbury Outfitters, an outdoors and gun store.

Coshocton County sheriff's deputies said store clerk John Bryant was showing a man how to load a gun. The employee thought the chamber was clear, but it wasn't, deputies said. When Bryant tried to take the bullet out of the gun, it fired, and a bullet ricocheted off the floor and struck the man's son, Ryan Gildow, in the leg.

The child is in fair condition.

The store's owner, Joe Miller, said he has a strict policy of not allowing loaded guns in the store.

There is no word on if any charges will be filed.
