CLEVELAND -- 5 On Your Side Investigator Duane Pohlman is making sure that everything goes along smoothly at the polls. He will be monitoring the activities at area polling locations to find out if there are any problems and providing up-to-the-minute details.Be sure to check back often for updates.10:06 p.m.Michael Vu just ended his impromptu press conference. The overall message according to Michael: "I think we've come a long way and do believe we've had a good day."9:58 p.m.Michael Vu is holding a press conference...stay tuned to NN5 for updates.9 p.m.It is 9:00 and all of the polls are officially closed.8:55 p.m.The first few bags of memory cards are arriving now. Also, in less than 10 minutes they will begin the absentee tally.8:06 p.m.Statewide implications -- election results will be held up until 9 p.m. across the state.7:12 p.m.Yes in fact 16 locations - all on the east side - will remain open until 9 p.m. That means that NO votes can be counted until ALL polls are closed.6:56 p.m.We just got word from our people - 16 poll locations will remain open until 9 pm. We're waiting for the official announcement which is expected in 10 minutes.6:45 p.m.There will be a news conference beginning any minute now to address the results of the lawsuit filed by the Ohio Democratic Party.5:20 p.m.There was an unexpectedly low voter turnout today. As of 2 o’clock, only 13 percent! If there is no afternoon push, turnout could be even lighter than in May. And we’re waiting on numbers to be release at 7:30. BOE officials will literally hit a button and we will have the results from the absentee ballots. 4:43 p.m.In Cuyahoga County there are 6,307 Electronic Voting Devices. An additional 900 were added for the 2006 General Election. There is a 1:173 voting device to voter ratio on this Election Day. And it is estimated that potentially 50 percent of the people voting in this election will use the Electronic Voting Device for the first time.4:30 p.m.It's been pretty quiet here at the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections for the past 45 minutes, but now - just after 4 p.m. - begins the late afternoon rush of voters. We'll keep you posted.3:22 p.m.No issue of screen freezes at this time and we are still waiting to hear about voter turnout. For those of you wondering if the "no show" workers have been paid for training, the answer is no.3:01 p.m.One thing that has come up is the use of optical scan ballots. These were used when machines went down. The ballots were placed in provisional envelopes and marked regular. BOE says these will be counted as part of the official count. Along those same lines is the possibility that some voters may have been given only the candidates page and not the issues page for optical scan ballots. That will be investigated, and if that is the case, the voter will be contacted.2:55 p.m.The Board of Elections meeting started an hour late.On a nice note, Virginia Hall, a poll worker for 20 plus years, was honored.Report: Four polling locations did not open on time. 22. Presiding judges not in place as well as a number of election workers who did not show. Duplicate calls on same issue and they are checking on citywide power failure in Brook Park.1:14 p.m.I voted! The craziness of covering past elections often keeps me away from my dutym. But I went upstairs and got a provisional ballot, since I can't. Drive all the way back to my polling location. By the way, there were delays -- it took 12 minutes to deliver me a ballot. 12:54p.m.Very few issues with identification which was a concern since this is the first time people are being asked to verify who they are. 12:46 p.m.Some perspective here -- 43 polling locations in Cuyahoga County had problems today. Most involved those new machines. While that was a major pain for those voters who faced delays and chaos, it is much better than what happened in May.During that debacle, 145 polling locations were in trouble. With so much attention focused on Cuyahoga County's trouble, it appears the BOE is handling the pressure and even rising to the occasion. But, then again, the day is not over. 12:26 p.m.Despite the rain, the turnout appears to be very good right now. If you have any questions, there is an election day hotline. That number is 216.443.3298. 12:20 p.m.Another update thanks to photographer Dave Arnold -- there was one machine that was tampered with and another machine broken at Woodbury Elementary in Shaker. On a positive note, the polling location at 167th and Euclid said everything is running smoothly after a woman fainted, knocking down two machines. They were quickly back online.12:07 p.m.No major problems at this hour. The BOE is encouraging people to know how they are voting No polling locations are using paper right now.12:01 p.m.Have not received updates for a while but here is an interesting tidbit -- hospital voting applications need to be received by BOE by 3 p.m. Inspectors will be sent to patients with absentee ballots.11:46 a.m.Getting word that one location ran out of optical scan ballots but like I reported before backup ballots are being printed.11:18 a.m.After talking with folks at the Center for Election Integrity they say there are several locations missing poll workers. Generally, the polling locations are down one worker but there is no official word on worker turnout The BOE says less have shown than they were hoping for. Voter turnout numbers are going to be a while.11:10 a.m.Many polling locations still using paper ballots and more are being printed so they do not run out, so voters be prepared to use optical scan ballots. 11 a.m.At least one location had problems with the voter access cards, which basically activate the machine. Poll workers immediately brought out paper ballots.10:44 a.m.Seems the worst so far has been Boulevard School in Shaker Heights, where the machines were not working and the election day technicians did not show.Instead of staying, voters left and within 20 minutes after polls opened. Paper ballots were being used. But all in all, the BOE officials say the problems are minor and to some extent expected, considering there are 573 polling locations.10:22 a.m.Some polling locations have long lines because not all machines are up and running and people are taking longer because it is a long ballot.10:18 a.m.Robert fulton determined not to have problems. Handful of polling places still voting by paper. No voter turnout numbers yet.9:30 a.m. I am told I will get a voter turnout number in 15 minutes.8:47 a.m.Techicians are checking 43 polling locations that are using paper ballots.9:03 a.m.Recently a few calls from people confused about polling locations but sounds like an issue of having moved.8:38 a.m.Alcazar Hotel and Grace Christian Missionary Alliance are voting by paper ballots. Beachland Presbyterian up and running voting with paper at Highland Heights Community Center. Robert Fulton Elementary turning people away. They are checking into. At Woodbury School in Shaker, there are lines out the door. Two machines are working.7:30 a.m.Everything running smoothly still using paper ballots at Boulevard School. 7:08 a.m.At Boulevard School, one machine working but paper ballots are being used. Also, the election day technician had not shown up so a replacement is on the way. All polling locations are open. 6:56 a.m.Some polling locations have not called in yet. About four polls had purple status but that was resolved within minutes. As I am writing this I am hearing about a problem at Boulevard School in Shaker Heights paper ballots are being brought out because machines are not working.6:35 a.m.Polling location at wiley middle school in university heights nobody there to open polls yet6 a.m. So far so good. Polling locations are starting to call in to say they are on line and ready to go.
