Podcast: What Is It?

You have been watching NewsChannel5 on your TV, but now you can also listen to it on your iPod, MP3 player or on your computer.

We're proud to be the first station in northeast Ohio to bring you a podcast through newsnet5.com. It's another example of how NewsChannel5 is On Your Side.

Right now, the first podcast in Cleveland is available for our noon news. We will soon add health, consumer and special programming to the list.

In short, podcasts are MP3 audio programs that are available to be downloaded onto your computer and transferred to an iPod or any portable media device that supports MP3s.

How Do I Get It?

Getting the daily podcast is surprisingly easy -- and free! Several free programs are available online that will allow you to download the daily MP3 feeds.

Here's a list of some popular programs:

• iPodder (recommended)
• iPodderX (mac users only)
• jpodder

After you've downloaded a program, you'll be asked to enter a URL to subscribe to the podcast feed. In order to subscribe to an individual newsnet5.com Podcast, enter the following URL:

After the download is complete, the individual podcasts will appear on your computer as MP3 files. You can listen directly on your computer or load them onto your portable music player! Once you've downloaded a podcast program, the entire process of receiving the latest podcast should take less than a minute.

If you use iPodder to download the feed you can either copy/paste podcast feed URLs into the text input box on the Status tab and click Add Feed.

Or you can click on the Directory tab. Navigate the tree by clicking or double-clicking on the name of the directory or the folder icons.

Podcast feeds will have an orange dash icon next to them. When you select a feed, its URL will appear at the bottom of the window. Add the feed to your subscriptions by clicking Add. It should show up in the main subscriptions window with state "newly-subscribed."
