Get Tips For Organizing Your Desk

Sticky Notes Help You Remember

POSTED: 11:26 a.m. EDT August 14, 2002

Keeping your desk in order could help you be more efficient at work. The key is figuring out where to put all your things.

In "Organizing Your Life," Tracy Carloss has tips to get you to put everything in its place.

Organizing a desk or work space can seem like a huge undertaking, but it doesn't have to be.

"Probably filing cabinet, that's the first place I would start. Because I have a lot of files. My filing cabinet is tucked away so you really can't see it, but I have a two drawer filing system," Adrienne Pace said.

By filing away papers you don't need, you create more workspace, not to mention keeping your desktop clean, Carloss said. The same rules apply when setting up a home office.

"Well, there are a couple key factors in making sure you have adequate equipment. It doesn't have to be expensive or fancy just so you have somewhere to store your documents, your papers, your paper clips properly," said Jill Ellen Shankar with Organized Planet, Inc.

Pace said that she keeps paper clips, rubber bands and pens in sight, in part, to keep them organized.

"I try to keep that on top of the desk and keep people out of the desk," Pace said.

Another tip is Post-Its. The little pieces of paper stick just about everywhere and are a great way to remind you of those important things you don't want to forget.
