NHL Game Summary - Nashville At Calgary
POSTED: 1:58 am EST January 23,
2004
Calgary, AB -- Shean Donovan and Matthew Lombardi both scored
two goals and Roman Turek recorded his 25th career shutout, as the Calgary
Flames blanked the Nashville Predators, 4-0, at the Saddledome. Turek, who had missed a large portion of the season with a knee injury, made
his seventh start of the campaign and earned his first shutout with 23 saves. Steven Reinprecht and Chris Clark each notched a pair of assists for Calgary,
which is 2-3-1 in its last six games. The Flames were alerted earlier Thursday evening that forward Jarome Iginla
will represent the Western Conference as a reserve in February's All-Star
Game. "We scored big goals and completed," Calgary head coach Darryl Sutter said. Tomas Vokoun, who will also go to the All-Star Game, allowed four goals on
just 17 shots for Nashville, which had a seven-game unbeaten streak halted
(5-1-2). Predators defenseman Kimmo Timonen was also named as a Western
Conference reserve. Lombardi started the scoring with the first of two opening-period power-play
goals for the Flames at the 10:11 mark. Just over four minutes later, with Marek Zidlicky off the ice after a holding
minor, Donovan, who was celebrating a birthday, swept in his 14th goal from in
front for a 2-0 Calgary edge. Donovan's second tally of the night came while the Flames were short-handed.
Despite Calgary defenseman Toni Lydman sitting in the box for holding, Donovan
skated with the puck down the right-wing side and released a wrist shot from
inside the circle that beat Vokoun at 5:45 of the middle session. Calgary then went ahead by four on a rebound goal by Lombardi. Reinprecht
attempted a stuffer at the right post, but was denied. The rebound, though,
sat in the crease before Lombardi punched it in with 8:49 to play in the
second period. Lombardi's 11th marker of the season chased Vokoun from the net in favor of
Chris Mason. The frustrated Predators became physical in the third period, persuading
several Flames into fights and the remainder of the game was penalty-filled. "You have to play hard and it's getting tougher (to win in the NHL)," Sutter
added. "We have guys who are still learning that."Game Notes:This was the Flames' first victory over Nashville in the last five meetings
(1-2-2)...Nashville is winless in its last four trips to Calgary (0-2-2)...The
Flames were 2-for-8 on the power play, while the Preds failed on three
opportunities with the extra skater...Mason ended with 11 saves...It marked
Turek's first shutout since he blanked the Phoenix Coyotes on March 24, 2003.
