Laviolette To Remain Behind 'Canes Bench

POSTED: 6:02 pm EDT May 16, 2008

(Sports Network) - Peter Laviolette, head coach of the Carolina Hurricanes, will remain the behind the team's bench for next season.

Carolina general manager Jim Rutherford made the announcement Friday, after he, Laviolette and team owner Peter Karmanos met on Thursday to discuss the state of the team.

Despite winning 52 regular-season games and the Stanley Cup in 2005-2006, the Hurricanes have missed the playoffs in each of the last two years.

This past season saw the Washington Capitals claim the Southeast Division crown and knock the 'Canes from the postseason in the final weekend after Carolina led the division by four points with four games to play.

Laviolette, the 43-year-old Massachusetts native, is 155-119-28 over four seasons in Raleigh. He holds a 232-177-28 record with 25 ties over six campaigns with the Islanders (2001-03) and Hurricanes.
