Jets Trade Up To Take Sanchez At No. 5

POSTED: 10:34 pm EDT April 25, 2009

(Sports Network) - The New York Jets acquired the No. 5 pick in Saturday's NFL Draft from Cleveland in order to select USC quarterback Mark Sanchez.

In exchange for getting the fifth pick, the Jets gave the Browns their original first-round pick (No. 17), the 52nd overall pick and three players -- defensive end Kenyon Coleman, quarterback Brett Ratliff and defensive back Abram Elam.

The package allowed the Jets to select their apparent quarterback of the future in Sanchez. He threw for 3,207 yards and 34 touchdowns, against just 10 interceptions, in his junior season of 2008, leading the Trojans to a Rose Bowl victory.

"I'm really pleased with the pick and I knew that something was going on," Sanchez said. "I didn't know if it would be this pick, but it's pretty special. I am fired up about it."

Sanchez's going to the Jets came after a disastrous end to New York's 2008 season. With Brett Favre at quarterback, the Jets lost four of their final five games and missed the playoffs, leading to the firing of head coach Eric Mangini.

While Favre is gone, the Jets' starting QB job is still uncertain. New York still has three-year veteran Kellen Clemens, who started eight games for the club in 2007.

"You know, the only thing I can say to that is that I've never grown up dreaming of being a back-up," Sanchez said. "That's what it's all about and I'm sure Kellen Clemens feels the same way. That's what the position is all about is competing for a job and that's all I know how to do."

On the opposite end of the trade, the Browns got value in Elam, who played in all 16 games -- nine starts -- for the Jets last season and totaled 69 tackles, three passes defensed and an interception.

Coleman also played in 16 games -- 15 starts -- for New York in 2008, compiling 53 tackles and 0.5 sacks, while Ratliff did not play.
