NFL Game Summary - Kansas City At Jacksonville

POSTED: 12:46 am EST November 9, 2009

(Sports Network) - David Garrard threw for 264 yards and a touchdown, and Maurice Jones-Drew added 97 yards rushing with a score, as the Jaguars held on for a 24-21 win over the Kansas City Chiefs at Jacksonville Municipal Stadium.

Garrard completed 18 of 27 pass attempts, while Mike Sims-Walker turned in a fantastic performance with six catches for 147 yards and a TD for Jacksonville (4-4), which rebounded nicely from an embarrassing 30-13 loss at Tennessee last Sunday. The Jaguars have won four of their last six after opening the season 0-2. Rashad Jennings added a 28-yard scoring run.

"I'm feeling great. It's always good to get a win here," Jones-Drew said. "We were able to break some runs toward the end of the game. David did a great job at distributing the ball, and Mike Sims-Walker did a great job...We just got to keep improving."

Matt Cassell finished 23-of-39 passing with 262 yards and a pair of scores, while recently signed Chris Chambers had three grabs for 70 yards with two touchdowns for the Chiefs (1-7), who had a bye last week, but suffered a 37-7 setback at the hands of San Diego on October 25. Kansas City's only win of the season came on October 18 at Washington.

Dwayne Bowe and Lance Long each had 74 yards receiving on four and eight catches, respectively. Ryan Succop nailed a pair of field goals in defeat.

"I thought the guys really fought back, really fought hard to get back in the game, converted some key plays, recovered an onside kick and gave us a chance at the end of the game to potentially win," Haley said.

Running back Larry Johnson did not play while serving out the second game of a two-week suspension from Haley for conduct detrimental to the team.

According to reports, Johnson called Haley out in a Twitter post before using a pair of gay slurs on his Twitter profile, and, a day later, to a group of reporters.

With the Chiefs trailing 24-6 late in the fourth quarter, Cassell showed a little resiliency when he hit Chambers in stride for a 54-yard touchdown pass with 2:32 left. KC then recovered the onside kick and Cassell again found Chambers, this time for a five-yard TD. A two-point conversion would make it 24-21 with 1:01 to play.

Kansas City tried another onside kick, but Jones-Drew fell on it and the Jags would pick up a much needed first down to run out the clock.

Succop's 45-yard field goal in the early stages of the opening quarter put the Chiefs in front. Jacksonville quickly answered on its ensuing possession when Jennings ran for a 28-yard score that capped a nine-play, 79-yard drive.

Tory Holt's catch and fumble late in the second led to a Succop 21-yard effort that got KC to within 7-6 with nearly 2 1/2 minutes remaining.

The Jags then took advantage of some shoddy Chiefs defense with just over a minute to play in the half. After picking up a pair of first downs, Garrard found Sims-Walker along the far sideline for a 61-yard catch-and-run that went the distance, lifting Jacksonville to a 14-6 edge heading into the break.

A 45-yard Garrard-to-Sims-Walker hookup led to a Josh Scobee 27-yard field goal with under a minute to play in the third. Jones-Drew got in on the scoring with a powerful 10-yard TD run with 4:26 remaining after Mike Thomas gave the Jags good field position with a 44-yard punt return.

Game Notes:

Kansas City will visit Oakland next Sunday, while Jacksonville plays at the New York Jets...Jacksonville improved to 6-2 in its all-time series with Kansas City, including a 17-7 road win when the teams last met, in 2007...Holt finished with four catches for 37 yards.
