Saints Take Down 49ers Behind Brees

POSTED: 10:15 pm EDT September 28, 2008

(Sports Network) - Drew Brees completed 23-of-35 passes for 363 yards and three touchdowns, and the New Orleans Saints routed the San Francisco 49ers, 31-17.

Lance Moore had seven catches for 101 yards and two touchdowns for the Saints (2-2), who rebounded from a two-game losing streak to get back to .500 on the season. Robert Meachem had two catches for 99 yards, including a 47-yard touchdown, for New Orleans.

Deuce McAllister rushed for 73 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries for the Saints.

"I thought as a team we played inspired football and played hard," said Saints coach Sean Payton. "I thought we rushed the passer very well today, and Drew played well. It was great to see Deuce get in there and be what we knew he could be."

J.T. O'Sullivan completed 18-of-36 passes for 257 yards with one touchdown, but threw two costly interceptions for the 49ers (2-2), who had won two in a row after dropping the season opener. Arnaz Battle had seven catches for 120 yards for the Niners, who got three field goals from Joe Nedney. The loss came one week after San Francisco trounced the Detroit Lions, 31-13.

"We didn't play well in any of the three areas: offense, defense, special teams," said 49ers coach Mike Nolan. "It was a reverse of last week."

The Saints had a chance to ice the win with a touchdown after an 81-yard catch-and-run by Devery Henderson put them at the San Francisco six-yard-line in the fourth quarter, but Niners safety Michael Lewis forced fullback Olaniyi Sobomehin to fumble just short of the goal line after a catch, and San Francisco recovered.

The Niners quickly drove down the field, and O'Sullivan's five-yard touchdown pass to Isaac Bruce and two-point conversion pass to Frank Gore pulled San Francisco within 28-17 with 4:08 to play.

Moore easily fielded the onsides kick, though, and Martin Gramatica's 31-yard field goal with 27 seconds left sealed the win.

After Nedney's 47-yard field goal put San Francisco up 3-0 with 7:22 to play in the first, it was all Saints.

New Orleans defensive end Will Smith hit O'Sullivan from behind early in the second quarter, forcing the ball loose, and Jonathan Vilma fell on the ball just before it squirted out of bounds at the San Francisco 32-yard-line.

The Saints quickly capitalized on the turnover, and Brees hit Moore on a quick out for a six-yard touchdown pass, giving the Saints a 7-3 lead with 9:31 remaining in the first half.

Brees and Moore connected again later in the quarter, this time on a 33-yard strike that Moore made a sliding grab of in the end zone, and the Saints took a 14-3 advantage with three minutes to play in the half.

Another Nedney field goal, this one from 49 yards out, pulled the Niners within 14-6 with 1:44 left in the half, but the San Francisco secondary couldn't hold Brees and Company off the scoreboard. A 47-yard bomb to Meachem extended the Saints lead to 21-6 with 52 seconds remaining in the half, and New Orleans took the advantage into the intermission.

Nedney's 38-yard field goal cut the deficit to 21-9 with 10:18 to play in the third quarter, and the Niners had a chance to make a game of it when they drove deep into New Orleans territory late in the third quarter. On a 2nd- and-5 from the 10-yard-line O'Sullivan was picked off by Kevin Kaesviharn at the four-yard-line, though, and the Saints soon pulled away.

New Orleans marched 91 yards on 10 plays after Kaesviharn's interception, and McCallister dove over the pile and into the end zone from one yard out to give the Saints a commanding 28-9 lead with 11:23 to play in the fourth quarter.

Game Notes

Saints cornerback Randall Gay was scratched from the lineup with a hamstring injury, and running back Aaron Stecker was scratched for a fourth straight game, also with a hamstring injury...Willie Roaf, an 11-time Pro Bowl selection at offensive tackle for the Saints and Kansas City Chiefs, was honored by New Orleans at halftime. Roaf played the first nine of his 13- season career in New Orleans.
