Giants Part Ways With Backup QB Lorenzen

POSTED: 5:46 pm EDT June 23, 2008

(Sports Network) - The New York Giants waived popular backup quarterback Jared Lorenzen on Monday.

The reigning Super Bowl champions acquired Lorenzen as an undrafted free agent out of Kentucky in 2004, where he set school records in passing yards and passing touchdowns.

Listed at 6-foot-4, 285 pounds, Lorenzen made the Giants roster in 2005 and spent the next three seasons backing up Eli Manning, the first-overall pick in the 2004 NFL Draft.

Respectfully dubbed by many as "The Hefty Lefty" and "Pillsbury Throwboy," the 27-year old only played in four regular season games throughout his career, completing 4-of-8 passes for 28 yards to go with four rushing yards.

In 2007, Lorenzen was inactive for the final 14 regular season games and all four postseason affairs, but was a mainstay on the sidelines during the Giants' championship run.

New York also released wide receiver Todd Lowber, long snapper Nick Leeson, defensive tackle Brian Soi and offensive lineman Jacobs Hobbs.
