Bucs Edge Vikings To Keep Pace In NFC South

POSTED: 1:03 am EST November 17, 2008

(Sports Network) - Matt Bryant kicked four field goals and B.J. Askew rushed for his first-career touchdown, as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers edged the Minnesota Vikings, 19-13, at Raymond James Stadium.

Jeff Garcia completed 23-of-30 passes for 255 yards, while Jerramy Stevens caught six balls for 84 yards for Tampa Bay (7-3), which has won four of its last five games. Warrick Dunn rushed for 53 yards and had four grabs for 65 yards in the win.

"Any running back relishes that opportunity, and it was tough because I really haven't played a lot in the last few weeks," Dunn said about replacing running back Earnest Graham, who left with an right ankle injury early in the game. "So I had to get a feel for the game. It was just stepping up for the team."

Tampa Bay is in second place in the NFC South, one game behind Carolina, which defeated Detroit on Sunday.

Buccaneers running back Carnell "Cadillac" Williams, who was activated off the physically unable to perform list earlier in the week, was inactive, still recovering from a torn patellar tendon suffered in a contest against Carolina on September 30, 2007.

Gus Frerotte finished 14-of-20 for 138 yards, including a four-yard touchdown pass to Bobby Wade. Adrian Peterson rushed 19 times for 85 yards in defeat for the Vikings (5-5), who had won their previous two, but now sit in a three-way tie with Green Bay and Chicago for first place in the NFC North.

"They really got us out of our game in the second half," Peterson said. "We had some opportunities to make big plays, we just didn't come up with it."

With the Vikings holding a 13-6 lead after one half of play, the Bucs got the ball to start the third quarter and quickly knotted the game. After Garcia guided the offense down to the Minnesota 32 and facing a 2nd-and-25, the quarterback hit Stevens for 31 yards and Askew banged it in for the score on the next play.

Tampa took its first lead of the game on a 29-yard field goal by Bryant with 5:36 left in the fourth quarter. After the Bucs worked there way down the field on a good time-consuming drive, Dunn was stopped on a 3rd-and-1 on the Minnesota 11 and Bryant was called on to boot the field goal.

On the ensuing kickoff, a fumble by Maurice Hicks led to 26-yard effort by Bryant, with Tampa going up by a 19-13 score with 3:30 left.

Minnesota wasn't able to sustain any significant offense on its next offensive try, but Bryant missed wide right from 45 yards away. The Vikings had one last chance, down by six with just under two minutes remaining, but on 2nd-and-28 from the their own 18, Chester Taylor fumbled after grabbing a short screen pass. The Bucs recovered and ran out the clock to perverse the win.

"It was not like we felt like we played terrible in the first half," Buccaneers defensive back Ronde Barber said about the team's defense. "But we felt like we game them opportunities. The second half was the way we like to play football. We came out of the locker room, saying, put it on us and we did."

After Tampa Bay was stopped on 4th-and-1 on its first possession of the contest on its own 37-yard-line, the Vikings opened the scoring when Ryan Longwell nailed a 43-yard field goal, capping an eight-play, 36-yard drive. However, a 39-yarder by Bryant on the Buccaneers ensuing drive tied things at 3-3 with 2:48 left in the opening quarter.

Minnesota responded on its next possession when Wade caught a four-yard TD pass in the early stages of the second. Starting on their own 24, the Vikes quickly got inside Tampa territory to the 43 on three straight carries by Peterson.

Frerotte then connected with Bernard Berrian for 16 more and a roughing-the- passer penalty moved the ball to the 13. Three plays later, the signal-caller found Wade along the near sideline for the score, putting the visitors in front by a 10-3 margin. But a Bryant 26-yard chip shot on the Bucs next set made it a four-point game.

Another field-goal by Longwell, this time from 37 yards, capped a 12-play, 51- yard drive to extend the Vikings lead to 13-6 with 1:47 remaining in the second stanza.
