Rivers And Chargers Hold Off Chiefs

POSTED: 8:27 pm EST November 9, 2008

(Sports Network) - Clinton Hart knocked away a potential two- point conversion pass with 23 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, as the San Diego Chargers held on for a 20-19 win over the Kansas City Chiefs.

Philip Rivers threw for 316 yards, notching his fourth 300-yard game this season, and two touchdowns including the go-ahead score in the fourth quarter. Rivers was 27-of-36 passing and also tossed a pair of interceptions for the Chargers (4-5), who snapped a two-game slide. LaDainian Tomlinson gained 78 yards on 22 carries and added four catches for 39 yards. Antonio Gates and Malcolm Floyd both caught TD passes in the win.

Tomlinson passed O.J. Simpson and Corey Dillon for 15th place on the all-time rushing list at 11,279 yards.

Tyler Thigpen was solid in the start, throwing for 266 yards and three TDs on 27-of-41 passing and also running for 26 yards for the Chiefs (1-8), who have let five straight contests slip away. Tony Gonzalez caught 10 balls for 113 yards and two scores, while Mark Bradley had 81 yards on nine catches with a score.

San Diego embarked on a drive from its own six-yard line that bridged the final two quarters. Tomlinson ran for five yards before the third stanza expired. Rivers threw for 22 yards over the next two plays and, seven plays later, Vincent Jackson hauled in a 23-yard pass to move the ball to the Kansas City 27.

Facing a 3rd-and-8, Rivers hit Gates for a gain of 11 yards and it was 1st- and-10 at the Chiefs 11. Three plays later, Rivers again hit Gates coming across the middle for an eight-yard TD. The score gave the Chargers a 20-13 lead with 6:55 left in the contest.

The Chiefs punted on their next possession, a recurring theme for Kansas City, which punted on each of its first five possessions in the second half, and the Chargers took over deep in their own territory. San Diego, though, went three- and-out and the Chiefs got the ball back.

"I think we had over 400 yards of offense, so we did a lot of good things," Rivers said. "We just didn't cash in in the red zone a couple of times. A turnover here and there, a couple of missed throws, all those things can get you beat, fortunately they didn't today."

Kansas City started at its own 40 with three minutes left in the game. Dantrell Savage busted up the middle for eight yards on 3rd-and-1 for a new set of downs at the San Diego 43, as the clock stopped for the two minute warning.

Moments later, a seven-yard pass to Bradley made it 1st-and-10 at the 31. An incomplete pass followed, then a two-yard catch by Savage before offsetting penalties made it 3rd-and-8 at the 29 with 1:08 left.

An incomplete pass made it 4th-and-8, but Bradley grabbed an 11-yard toss to move the chains to the 18 with 51 ticks left.

Thigpen overthrew his receiver in the back of the end zone on first down, then Gonzalez had a pass broken up, but Hart was flagged for pass interference. On 1st-and-goal from the one, Thigpen rolled to his right on a bootleg, but his pass eluded Dwayne Bowe. Mike Cox then went up the middle, but was stopped for a loss of two yards.

On third down, Thigpen dropped back and hit Gonzalez in double coverage for a three-yard score. The Chiefs brazenly decided to go for the win with a two- point conversion, but as Thigpen took the snap out of the shotgun formation, his fade route toss to Gonzalez in the right corner of the end zone was knocked down by Hart.

The ensuing onsides kick was recovered by Brandon Manumaleuna, which effectively ended any hopes the Chiefs had of an upset.

"I thought our guys played about as good as we could play, and we fell short," said Chiefs coach Herm Edwards.

Thigpen hit Bradley on a 30-yard TD pass late in the first quarter to give the Chiefs a 7-0 lead. The score capped a 12-play, 95-yard drive that lasted upwards of seven minutes.

Nate Kaeding then split the uprights on a 34-yard field goal just 57 seconds into the second quarter, and the Chargers were within 7-3.

Another Kaeding boot made it a one-point game with 6:47 left prior to the intermission.

On the ensuing Kansas City possession, the Chiefs started at their own 17-yard line. The Chiefs moved the ball to their 43 before Gonzalez hauled in a 23- yard pass, and then caught another ball, and after getting some blocks, danced his way 34 yards down the left sideline to paydirt. The extra point was botched, making it 13-6 heading into the break.

Following a Kansas City three-and-out, the Chargers took over at their own 42. Tomlinson accounted for 28 yards on the trek and Rivers closed it out with a five-yard TD pass to Floyd wide open in the middle of the end zone.

The eight-play drive tied the game at 13-13 with 3:43 left before the final 15 minutes of play.
