NFL Dismisses Tampering Charges Involving Favre

POSTED: 5:35 pm EDT August 4, 2008

(Sports Network) - NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has completed his review of tampering charges levied by the Green Bay Packers against the Minnesota Vikings involving quarterback Brett Favre and said no league rules were violated.

In a brief statement issued by the league, Goodell said, "None of those conversations suggest that Favre was soliciting a job or that other teams were soliciting his services."

Favre was reinstated by the league after a brief retirement and his future with the Packers is unclear.

Before officially filing reinstatement papers, it was reported that Favre had spoken with Vikings offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell, a former Packers assistant and a close friend of the future Hall of Fame quarterback.

Monday's statement from the league acknowledged that there were conversations between Favre and Vikings coaches, though none of the talks apparently centered around the 38-year-old signal-caller trying to find out if the team was interested in his services.

A published report in the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel said the Packers and Vikings have had preliminary discussions about Favre, an idea Minnesota head coach Brad Childress denied.

Favre's relationship with the Packers has soured since he hinted about a return to action following his tearful retirement in March. After the announcement, the Packers anointed Aaron Rodgers as Favre's successor and addressed backup quarterback needs through the draft.

Last season, Favre led the Packers to the NFC Championship Game after throwing for 4,155 yards with 28 touchdowns and compiling a 95.7 passer rating during the regular season.
