NFL Preseason Preview - Indianapolis (0-2) At Atlanta (0-1)

POSTED: 3:26 pm EDT August 12, 2008

(Sports Network) - Quarterback Matt Ryan and head coach Mike Smith will be among those making their home Georgia Dome debuts on Saturday night, when the Atlanta Falcons play host to the Indianapolis Colts in a preseason matchup.

Ryan, the No. 3 overall draft pick out of Boston College, and Smith, the former Jacksonville Jaguars defensive coordinator and new Atlanta head man, are being counted on to deliver the organization from its recent doldrums.

After beginning the 2007 season mired in the Michael Vick dogfighting controversy, the Falcons stumbled to a 4-12 finish that included head coach Bobby Petrino's abrupt abandonment of the team with three games left to play.

On Saturday, Smith will be looking to secure his first win of any kind as a head coach, while Ryan will be seeking to build on a solid first preseason outing last week. The 6-5 signal-caller completed 9-of-15 passes for 113 yards and a touchdown pass in the Falcons' 20-17 loss at Jacksonville.

Also on hand for Atlanta will be running back and free agent pickup Michael Turner, who is getting his first crack at an NFL starting job after sitting behind LaDainian Tomlinson for four years in San Diego. Turner carried five times for 22 yards against the Jaguars last week.

On the injury front for the Falcons, end John Abraham could be out after spraining his ankle against the Jaguars, and centers Alex Stepanovich and Todd McClure are both battling back injuries.

The Colts, meanwhile, will come into Saturday's contest looking for a rare preseason victory. Following last week's 23-20 overtime loss to the Panthers, Indianapolis is now 2-14 in its last 16 warm-up contests.

Tony Dungy's squad will once again be without quarterback Peyton Manning, who is expected to be out for at least two more weeks following minor knee surgery.

Jim Sorgi will once again get the start under center for Indy, with Jared Lorenzen and Quinn Gray following him in the lineup.

Lorenzen shook off a rough outing against the Redskins in the Hall of Fame game by completing 12-of-23 passes for 117 yards and two touchdowns against the Panthers. Both of Lorenzen's scoring strikes went to reserve tight end Jacob Tamme.

Elsewhere on the Colts roster, defensive end Dwight Freeney (foot) and safety Bob Sanders (shoulder) remain out.

The Falcons lead the all-time preseason series with Indianapolis, 8-1, including a 27-21 triumph in the last such meeting, at the Tokyo Dome in Japan prior to the 2005 season.

Indianapolis was a 31-13 winner in a regular season game at the Georgia Dome last Thanksgiving night.
