Giants Send Shockey To New Orleans

POSTED: 4:53 pm EDT July 21, 2008

(Sports Network) - The New York Giants traded tight end Jeremy Shockey to New Orleans on Monday in exchange for the Saints' second- and fifth-round draft choices in 2009.

"He's an impact player, and has been a key part of every offense he has played for -- both as a blocker and as a receiver," said Saints general manager Mickey Loomis. "This is a move we have been working on closely with the Giants, and we're really pleased to add Jeremy to our roster."

Shockey, selected by New York in the first round (14th overall) of the 2002 NFL Draft, has played his entire six year career with the Giants, compiling 4228 yards and 27 touchdowns on 371 receptions. In postseason play, he had 13 catches for 143 yards and one score.

"Jeremy is a very talented football player who always played with great enthusiasm and great effort," Giants head coach Tom Coughlin said. "He was excited about playing. Jeremy always enjoyed being a physical football player and a tough football player. He's an outstanding football player who plays the game full-speed and plays the game the way it was meant to be played."

During last year's improbable Super Bowl run -- during which Shockey was injured and unable to play -- tight end Kevin Boss emerged, starting two regular season and four playoff games and making nine catches for 140 yards and a touchdown.

In addition to Boss, the Giants enter training camp with tight ends Michael Matthews, Darcy Johnson, Jerome Collins and rookie Eric Butler.

"We have five young kids who are all vying for the position," Giants head coach Tom Coughlin said. "The tight end position will be a very competitive position in training camp."

The 27-year-old Shockey reportedly engaged in a shouting match with general manager Jerry Reese during the team's recent minicamp, adding to the controversy surrounding the enigmatic tight end.

The Saints had offered the exact same compensation package for Shockey during this year's NFL Draft, but New York rejected the trade proposal. The deal is pending league approval, and Shockey must also pass a physical.
