Seattle, WA -- (Sports Network) - D.J. Hackett hauled in the go-ahead touchdown pass with 6:06 left and Marcus Trufant returned an interception 78 yards for a score just 28 seconds later, and the Seattle Seahawks went on to defeat the Washington Redskins 35-14 in their NFC wild card matchup at Qwest Field.

Matt Hasselbeck overcame a pair of fourth-quarter interceptions to hit Hackett with the go-ahead score for the NFC West champion Seahawks (11-6), who advance to play the NFC North champion Green Bay Packers next weekend in the divisional round.

Hasselbeck finished 20-of-32 for 229 yards with one touchdown and the two picks and Hackett had six catches for 101 yards for Seattle, which has advanced past the opening round of the playoffs for the third straight season.

Todd Collins finished 29-of-50 for 266 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions for the Redskins (9-8), who entered the playoffs riding a four- game winning streak using the emotions of the tragic death of star safety Sean Taylor as motivation.

However, after rallying from a 13-0 deficit to lead 14-13 early in the fourth quarter, the momentum ran out.

"I haven't been part of a group that took more pride in the way that they played," said Washington head coach Joe Gibbs. "To come back during the season like that, and be able to put four (games) together like that at the end of the year to get themselves into the playoffs and overcome everything that they have this year, I told them that I was extremely proud of them."

Antwaan Randle-El had 10 receptions for 94 yards and a score and Santana Moss ended with six catches for 68 yards and a touchdown for Washington, which was making its first playoff appearance since 2005 and entered the postseason as the sixth seed in the conference.

Trailing 13-0 the Redskins began to rally, bridging the third and fourth quarters with a 12-play, 84-yard drive that culminated with a seven-yard touchdown pass from Collins to Randle-El. The key play during the possession was when Seattle's Brian Russell was called for pass interference on a 4th- and-1 at the Seahawks' 27.

Collins, a 36-year-old career back-up making his first postseason start, was 7-for-9 for 65 yards during the drive, which gave Washington life and more importantly gave the defense a prolonged rest.

The breather helped and the defense made its biggest play to that point when LaRon Landry picked off Hasselbeck's pass intended for Bobby Engram on the second play of the ensuing drive.

Three plays later, Collins hit Moss for a 30-yard touchdown and a 14-13 lead with 12:38 remaining.

The two scores came just 2:15 apart and Washington appeared poised for at least three more points after the ensuing kickoff.

Shaun Suisham kicked deep, but the ball got caught up in the wind, fell straight down and bounced over the head of return man Nate Burleson. Washington's Anthony Mix picked up the loose ball and ran 14 yards into the end zone. However, since an untouched kickoff can't be advanced by the kicking team, the Redskins got the ball at the Seattle 14-yard-line.

But, after moving the ball just two yards, the Redskins had to settle for a 20-yard field goal attempt by Suisham, who somehow hooked the ball wide left, keeping the score at 14-13 with 11:37 left.

Washington's offense then failed to get any points after Hasselbeck was picked off for a second time in the quarter by Landry and the missed opportunities ended up costing the Redskins.

"He was trying a little too hard which I think is something he does on occasion," said Seattle head coach Mike Holmgren of Hasselbeck. "He was trying to make big plays. He's a good enough player at this stage of his career that the big plays will come."

Later in the fourth, the Seahawks responded and took control of the game. Following a 33-yard punt by Washington's David Frost that gave Seattle the ball at the Redskins' 42 with just over eight minutes left, Hasselbeck orchestrated a five-play drive that ended with him hitting Hackett with a 20- yard touchdown strike. Hasselbeck then connected with Marcus Pollard to complete the two-point conversion for a 21-14 lead with 6:06 left.

Then, after Rock Cartwright returned the ensuing kickoff to the Seattle 44, Trufant picked off Collins on the first play from scrimmage and returned it 78 yards for the score and a comfortable 14-point lead, 28-14, with 5:38 on the clock.

Later, Jordan Babineaux returned an interception 57 yards for a score to ice the game with 27 seconds remaining.

"I think Todd fought his guts out," said Gibbs. "He certainly did a lot for this football team. He got hit some and came right back out fighting and brought us back to a point where we had a chance to win the game. I think you couldn't ask much more from Todd's performance for the five games he was in."

There was a total of 36 points scored in the fourth quarter after just 13 points were scored in the first three stanzas.

The running game was ineffective for both teams, as the Redskins ran for only 75 yards and Seattle 77. Clinton Portis led the Redskins with 52 yards, while Shaun Alexander led the Seahawks with 46.

Portis also had four catches for 28 yards.

Seattle got going late in the first quarter when Leonard Weaver capped a six- play, 45-yard drive with a 17-yard touchdown run for a 7-0 lead. The scoring drive was set up by a 20-yard punt return by Burleson, bringing the ball into Washington territory, and kept alive thanks to replay.

On play prior to the TD run, replay overturned a fumble by Alexander, giving the ball back to the Seahawks. Originally, Alexander's fumble was recovered by Fred Smoot at the 17 and returned to the Washington 35. However, Seattle challenged the play and won, as Alexander's knees were both down before the ball came loose.

The Seahawks added three more points in the second quarter when Josh Brown booted a 50-yard field goal with 8:58 left in the half and Seattle went into the break with a 10-0 lead.

Brown added another field goal later in the third quarter, connecting on a 33- yarder with 4:30 left until the fourth.

Weaver had just the one run for 17 yards...Seattle ended just 2-for-11 on third down conversions, while Washington went 4-for-18...Washington won the time of possession battle, 34:15 to 25:45...Collins was the third oldest quarterback to make his first career postseason start in league history. He stepped in for the Redskins when starter Jason Campbell went down with a knee injury in Week 14.
