NFL Game Summary - Kansas City At NY Jets

POSTED: 10:25 pm EST December 30, 2007

(Sports Network) - Mike Nugent's 43-yard field goal in overtime helped the New York Jets edge the Kansas City Chiefs, 13-10, in the season finale for both clubs at Giants Stadium.

The game-winning kick came after Nugent nailed a 33-yarder, but had it negated on a holding call. Then, after the Chiefs called a timeout, Nugent split the uprights to give the Jets the victory.

Thomas Jones rushed for 98 yards on 25 carries, and also caught one touchdown pass for the Jets (4-12), who snapped a three-game skid and won for only the second time in their last six contests.

Kellen Clemens connected on 13-of-25 passes for 115 yards and a TD in the win.

Brodie Croyle connected on 20-of-43 attempts for 195 yards and a touchdown for the Chiefs (4-12), who wrapped up the season on a nine-game losing streak. Tony Gonzalez caught seven balls for 64 yards in defeat, but did break Shannon Sharpe's record for receptions by a tight end.

Gonzalez entered the contest needing three catches to break the old record of 815. He tied the mark on a seven-yard reception on the Chiefs' first play of the second half. Two plays later, Gonzalez smashed the record by hauling in a short pass from Croyle and rumbling 17 yards.

"It's been a trying season for everyone," said Kansas City head coach Herm Edwards. "With all that we went through, the players always gave effort. We couldn't make plays at times and that's the difference in the season."

Clemens connected with Jones on a 15-yard shovel pass that served as the game's first score, less than two minutes into the second quarter. The six- play, 56-yard march was helped along by a Leon Washington pass to Wallace Wright for a gain of 36 yards. Washington took the direct snap, shuffled toward the sideline and floated the ball to a wide-open Wright to put the Jets deep in KC territory.

John Carney kicked a 40-yard field goal with 5:08 remaining in the second stanza to get the Chiefs on the board and cut it to 7-3.

The Jets responded on their next possession with Nugent's 27-yard field goal with 13 seconds left in the half.

The Chiefs knotted things up late, as Croyle took a shot from rookie linebacker David Harris but still connected on a 26-yard bomb to Jeff Webb that tied the score with 2:59 left in the contest.
