Internships: If you are interested in learning first-hand about careers in television, consider the WEWS comprehensive internship program. It is designed to provide students with hands-on experiences. In order to qualify for their non-paying position, you must be enrolled in an accredited college or university and you must be able to receive credit for the internship.

News Internships
  • News Assignment Desk: News interns are assigned primarily to the assignment desk which means they are routinely asked to answer incoming phone calls, to place calls to local law enforcement or story contacts and to communicate with news crews in the field. The environment of the news room can be somewhat intimidating, so self-confidence is a must.
  • Editing: Interns in this area will learn how news shows come together. They will work with editors on a daily basis as they learn the technical aspects of videotape editing. Interns will assist editors by receiving and cataloging video material from all over the world. They will learn to edit stories that are to appear on air and how these stories are organized and subsequently fed.
  • Sports: Interns in sports will assist the department in a multitude of ways, including clearing the sports wires, shot-sheeting and timing interviews, monitoring afternoon sports feeds and helping to keep the sports director informed on breaking events. Periodically, the sports intern will accompany the sports producer on a story. Sports interns who work the weekend schedule will track whatever games are televised and will assist the weekend sports anchor.
  • Live on Five: Interns in this area will be afforded an ideal opportunity to work with live television production. Responsibilities include answering phone, general filing, coordinating guests, shot-sheeting tapes, research and helping to develop show ideas. Interns will also work in-studio with talent, guests and the production crew.
  • Akron News Bureau: This internship is geared towards students attending school or living in the Akron area. It involves working as the assignment desk editor in Akron. Responsibilities are similar to those for the news assignment desk position described under News Internships, except more responsibilities are involved since there are fewer people working the Akron desk.
  • Team Five Investigators/Trouble Shooters: The intern working in this department will assist our local reporters and producer in researching investigative stories and consumer issues. Interns will be responsible for phone work and there will be opportunities to accompany reporters in the field.
  • Good Morning Cleveland: An internship with Good Morning Cleveland provides hands-on experience in the production of a live, daily morning news/talk show. Duties are varied, ranging from researching topics and keeping show records to assisting at the assignment desk and helping out viewiers. Student will get a real behind the scenes look at what it takes to produce one and half hours of live television daily. Bright energetic people who work well under pressure and who enjoy lots of people contact are being sought for this internship. Computers skills are helpful.
  • News Producing Internship: What does it "really" take to produce a live television newscast? Students interested in being the "brains behind the broadcast" should inquire about this internship. The up an coming television journalist will work with producers overseeing newscasts as they are being formatted until the final seconds of the broadcast tick away, live on air. Producing is like a pressure cooker and interns must be able to take the heat.

    Candidates must be good writers, orgainized, and willing to take direction. Hours will vary so the intern can see how each newscast is produced. By the end of the internship, candidates will have a portfolio of writing samples and newscasts to present to potential future employers. Only students interested in producing should apply.
  • NEWSNET5.COM: This individual will work closely with the content staff of NewsNet5.com. The intern will help write and edit stories and information for the Web site. Interns will also learn basic html and how elements of the site are put together. Great opportunity for students who have excellent writing skills and want to put them to use. Interns will get a hands-on experience working in the station's newsroom and promoting station material on the site.
Non-News Internships

  • Promotions: The candidate for an internship in promotion should enjoy working with people and dealing with the public. Responsibilities include assisting with the coordination of station events and special projects, answering viewer calls and letters, sending out promotional material, writing movie promos, scheduling and maintaining public service announcements and general office duties.
  • Sales: News Channel 5 is offering an internship in the sales department that provides hands-on-experience in the process of selling commercial time and special projects. The intern will have the opportunity to work closely with the sales managers and account executives as well as work independently. Students will assist in the sales process from prospecting potential customers to making sales calls to the completion of the sales agreement. During the course of the internship the student will learn how to use specialized sales computer programs and use proper television terminology. The student should be able to take the initiative in starting and completing projects and reports.
  • Operations: Interns working in production should have a strong interest in the basics of television and should not be afraid of manual labor. Students will earn to floor direct, run cable, construct and strike sets, work with live audiences and on remote shows. Three key elements are involved: live programming, prerecorded production and commercials. In addition, interns will learn to operate the teleprompter, to work with copy and receive instruction on camera operation.
  • Graphic Design: This internship is opened to a junior or senior majoring in graphic design and who has experience with Macintosh software, including any of the following: Photoshop, Freehand, Illustrator, Quark or PageMaker. Student should also have strong typographical skills. Intern will have the opportunity to learn the basics of broadcast design equipment and applications.
  • News Director's Office/Assignment Desk: This student would work directly with the News Director two days each week and would have the opportunity to work at the News Assignment Desk for one or two days. In the News Director's Office, student would book appearances for anchors and reporters, answer requests for station tours and general office duties. Assignment Desk duties would be to routinely answer incoming phone calls, place calls to local law enforcement or story contacts and to communicate with news crews in the field.
