CLEVELAND - Downtown Christmas parades were a festive and crowd-pleasing events in the Cleveland of yesteryear.
The Cleveland Press had sponsored the holiday happening ( Click here to see some of the Cleveland Press parade in 1959). But beginning in 1965, WIXY 1260 radio teamed up with the May Company to sponsor the parade.
In his book "This is Larry Morrow...My Life On and Off the Air", Larry Morrow said station owner Norm Wain decided to organize the parade just two months before the parade kickoff.
The film, some silent, some not, shows the potpourri of floats, marchers and characters marching down Euclid Avenue.
A clown mugs for the camera with an oversized- turkey leg, a Chinese dragon, unicycles, Cleveland politicians and of course, Santa Claus pass by our WEWS cameras.
Amid the parade footage, there is a short segment of Public Square being cleaned up in time for the holiday shopping season.
