Ohio organ donations down, yet donor signups rise

DAYTON, Ohio - More Ohioans are registering as organ donors, while donations are down in the state this year.

Organ procurement agency Life Connection of Ohio says 2011 figures show nearly 58 percent of Ohio motorists have declared themselves organ donors on their driver licenses. That's up from less than 48 percent in 2002.

Meanwhile, the Dayton Daily News reports 13 people have donated organs in Ohio through June 1 of this year, compared with 26 during the same period in 2010.

Life Connection of Ohio spokeswoman Cathi Arends says would-be donors fail to make their wishes clear to loved ones, so less than 4 out of 10 families give their consent to a donation.

The group says more than 2,000 Ohioans died waiting for organ transplants within the last 10 years.
