Saluting the people and their families who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

This Memorial Day, Northeast Ohio remembered the men and women in the armed services who lost their lives in the line of duty.

Friends and members of the American Legion Post 421, Dennis Clausing and Mike Sobera, told Newsnet5.com that Memorial Day holds a special place in their hearts.

"This is a legacy that has to be carried on," Clausing said.

"We need to remember all the people who sacrificed, and whose life changed after the war," Sobera added.

The two men remembered their times in the service and the lessons they picked up.

"I learned a lot, I learned discipline," Sobera said.

But they also shared gut-wrenching memories of what they lost.

"It was shell shock. You're in a twilight zone. You just lost one of your best friends," Clausing said.

Veterans and their families across Northeast Ohio joined the two and paid tribute to fellow soldiers and their friends, siblings and parents.

Veteran Rick DeChant saluted those who made it possible for our flag to keep flying.

"My family represents four generations of service; and we'd do it again in a heartbeat," DeChant told Newsnet 5.
