More than 3,000 sexual assault kits tested as part of Attorney General Sexual Assault Kit Initiative

COLUMBUS - More than 3,000 rape kits have been tested as part of a statewide initiative to revisit cold cases, the Ohio Attorney General's Office reports.

The Sexual Assault Kit Testing Initiative provides law enforcement agencies with free testing of untested sexual assault kits in which a crime is believed to have been committed.

Nearly 6,000 kits have been submitted by 121 law enforcement agencies across the state since the program was announced in December 2011, and of the 3,000 tested, nearly 1,000 have matched with subjects in the Combined DNA Index System.

In Cuyahoga County, the initiative has led to the indictments of 85 suspects.
