Ohioans are now able to drink and buy beer in the state with more alcohol in it.

Reporter Kristin Volk learned the change is part of a new state law going into effect this week. The purpose of the law is to help the growing craft brewing industry in Ohio. It could also be significant for retailers along the state's borders.

On Wednesday, the 12 percent alcohol-by-volume limit on beer will be no more. Ohio brewers will be able to make beer with a higher level of alcohol and stores will be able to sell it.

Supporters of the bill have argued that the 12 percent cap hindered brewers and their ability to be creative in making their products. It also forced craft beer buyers to go outside of Ohio to buy craft beer. Now, those same supporters say the new law will bring more jobs to the state.

High-alcohol content beer will be required to be labeled appropriately. The law will also allow cities and townships to create "open container districts" or outside drinking areas.
