DAYTON, Ohio - A Dayton man could face animal cruelty charges for keeping a seven-foot alligator in his basement.
The Humane Society of Greater Dayton pulled the animal out of the man's house on Sunday after getting a tip about mistreatment. Officials said the alligator was not being kept in proper conditions or being fed a proper diet.
"It was kept in the basement, which is No. 1. They're supposed to be out in the wild, so this alligator has a stunted growth," said Sheila Marquis with the humane society.
Officials said the gator had broken teeth, a messed up snout and was never exposed to natural sunlight. The animal is believed to be 15 years old and weighed 130, which is much less than it should.
Friends of the owner, who appeared in a video taunting the alligator, could also face charges.
