CANTON, Ohio - U.S. Rep. Jim Renacci (R-District 16) introduced legislation aimed at stopping IRS workers from targeting taxpayers for political purposes.
The Stop IRS Act would allow the IRS to immediately terminate workers engaged in singling out specific groups of taxpayers.
A government audit found IRS workers targeted Tea Party and other conservative groups seeking tax exempt status.
Members of the group told government officials they were subjected to unnecessary questions about their political and religious beliefs and experienced longer wait times than liberal groups.
Renacci is on the congressional committee overseeing the investigation into the scandal. He said it could take months to determine who ordered workers to target conservative groups.
