Donald Trump is not only the front-runner for the Republican presidential nomination. According to PolitiFact's infamous Truth-o-Meter, he' s also the candidate who has told the most outright whoppers.
Our partners at PolitiFact have reviewed over a hundred of Trump's public statements and more than 40 percent have rated False.
An example: when Trump talked taxes at a rally, claiming that the U.S. has "the highest tax rate anywhere in the world."
PolitiFact checked this claim and found that our income taxes are lower than other advanced nations.
The Pants on Fire rating is reserved for only the most egregious fact-twisting. So far, 20 percent of Trump's statements have received a Pants on Fire rating. Like when he said that he heard U.S. unemployment had reached as high as 42 percent.
PolitiFact found that most economists put the unemployment rate at less than 10 percent.
Trump's Truth-o-Meter stats are a sharp contrast to the highest polling Democratic candidate. A PolitiFact review of over 150 statements made by Hillary Clinton rated more than half as True or Mostly True.
They fact-checked this campaign ad statement by Clinton: "African-Americans are more likely to be arrested by police and sentenced to longer prison terms for doing the same thing that whites do." It rated True.
Clinton has received two Pants on Fire ratings. One was when she said she was under sniper fire in Bosnia, a claim that a reporter who'd been on the scene disputed. The other, from 2008, was when she claimed that "Obama basically threatened to bomb Pakistan."
